Important: these are close peers, not clones

Students often search “data science Hong Kong” and assume every programme is the same. They are not:

  • HKUST DSCT — joint Science + Engineering BSc; school-based entry; major declared after Year 1.
  • CUHK CDAS — closest peer: CS + Statistics Computational Data Science.
  • HKU closest match is BEng(AI&DataSc) (engineering), not a standalone BSc Data Science.
  • PolyU is a scheme with three possible awards after a common Year 1.
  • CityU is a dedicated BSc Data Science in the School of Data Science.

Math gates (what actually matters)

For GCSE/A-level/IB applicants, Math is often the real filter — not a vague “love of data.” Use this chart as a published-rules map, not a difficulty ranking inventing scores.

Chart comparing published Math requirements and preferences across five Hong Kong data science programmes
Published Math rules and preferences — CityU’s IB Math AI SL exclusion and HKUST’s Calculus + Python declare gate are the clearest hard filters in this set.

GCSE / IGCSE, A-level, IB + special Math

HKUST DSCT

QualificationPublished guidance
GCSE / IGCSENo DSCT-specific subject list. English (general): Eng Lang/Lit Grade 4/C; Eng as 2nd language 5/B
A-level≥3 AL. Sci A route: senior Math + Physics or Chemistry. Eng route: senior Math + Physics/Chemistry/Biology/CS
IBDiploma + English rules as published; same subject-route rules
Special MathSenior-level Math at entry. To declare DSCT after Y1: Calculus I+II + Python (COMP1023)

CUHK CDAS

QualificationPublished guidance
GCSE / IGCSENo programme-specific GCSE subjects found
A-levelGeneral min: 3 AL or 2 AL + 2 AS. Exact programme cut-offs not published
IBGeneral min 30/45. Prefers (not hard req): Math HL + one of Bio/Chem/CS/Econ/Physics HL
Special MathMath preferred at HL. HKDSE: Math Comp L4; M1/M2 preferred

HKU AI&DataSc

QualificationPublished guidance
GCSE / IGCSENo GCSE subject prerequisites published for this programme
A-levelNon-JUPAS lower boundary (2027–28): 2A*1A or better in best 3 ALs. No Math subject mandate stated for 6999
IBLower boundary IB 38. No HL Math mandate stated for 6999
Special MathJUPAS: Math L3; M1/M2 preferred. (HKU BStat has stricter Math — not this degree)

PolyU DSAI

QualificationPublished guidance
GCSE / IGCSENo GCSE subjects beyond English option: Eng C/4
A-levelGeneral intl: B+ in 3 AL. Scheme has no compulsory subjects; prefers Math, M1/M2, sciences, ICT, Econ
IBTypical successful ≥32; predicted ≥30 may get interview
Special MathPreferred Math + extended Math. No published compulsory HL / Further Math

CityU BSc DS

QualificationPublished guidance
GCSE / IGCSEGeneral Non-JUPAS: Eng Lang/Lit ≥ 4/C with A-levels. No other GCSE subject list
A-levelGeneral: 3 AL ≥ E. Programme-specific Math grade not published
IBDiploma ≥30. Math: AA HL/SL or AI HL accepted; AI SL not accepted
Special MathClearest published Math rule is that IB Math AI SL is rejected

Where no programme-specific GCSE subjects are stated, check the university’s general requirements. Published minimums and preferences are not typical offer scores.

What makes each programme unique

HKUST — BSc Data Science and Technology (DSCT)

Joint Mathematics + Computer Science tech BSc. Enter via Science (Group A) or Engineering with Extended Major in AI, complete Year-1 Calculus + Python prerequisites, then declare DSCT. Leaflet emphasis: ML, classification, clustering, data mining, databases, cloud, visualisation. If you enter via Eng+AI and choose DSCT, you must drop the Extended Major in AI.

CUHK — BSc Computational Data Science

Closest conceptual peer to DSCT: deep CS + Statistics, domain streams (including medicine/social science), required research / FYP. Prefer strong Math HL for IB applicants.

HKU — BEng(AI & Data Science)

Engineering professional degree with AI + DS. Common School of Computing and Data Science Year 1, then free choice of CompSc vs AI&DataSc (no quota). Optional 6200 Delta+ Hong Kong + Shanghai track. Accreditation path differs from a Science Faculty BSc.

PolyU — Scheme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

One scheme, three awards after common Year 1: AI / AI with FinTech / Data Science and Analytics — without a further competitive “re-application” step between those awards (per scheme design). Strong option if you want FinTech-flavoured AI.

CityU — BSc Data Science

Dedicated School of Data Science identity with modules spanning AI, social-media analytics, and statistical learning. Clearest published IB Math filter in this set: Math AI SL not accepted.

How to decide (use this order)

  1. Check your Math path first — IB Math AI SL applicants should treat CityU carefully; HKUST applicants should plan for Calculus I+II + Python before declaring DSCT.
  2. Pick the degree type you want — BSc Math/CS joint vs CS+Stats vs BEng AI&DS vs multi-major scheme vs dedicated DS school.
  3. Check whether Year 1 is “locked” or exploratory — HKUST/HKU/PolyU give more Year-1 choice architecture; CUHK/CityU are more programme-direct.
  4. Read one official page per shortlist — then verify the entry year (2026 vs 2027) before you apply.

Caveats

  • Figures mix 2025–2027 official pages. Re-check before you submit.
  • Minimum thresholds ≠ typical offers.
  • Where GCSE subject rules (beyond English) are blank, sources simply do not state them — we do not invent them.
  • Year 1/2 course lists are reconstructed from official curriculum structures; exact term placement can vary.
